Last week on Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu, Yuuji and Shouko spent a day at the amusement park defining their relationship. This week, the battle aspect of the series finally returns in force as the ESB system goes haywire. Hope you still have the NERV to watch this series.
Damnit Yoshii, don't start Instrumentality without permission!
Some delinquent tries to hack into the school’s computer system, and when it catches him, he trips a power line in the server room. This causes an ESB field across the campus, and makes everyone’s summons go crazy. First, they show idealized versions of the characters as adults, and much fanservice ensues. Then they go stark raving mad. Yoshii is the only one unaffected, since he has direct control over his chibi. Thus, the school has to depend on him to save the day. The other Class F students and the principal assist from the sidelines while Yoshii has to overcome everyone else’s avatars and reconnect the power line. He finally succeeds, but at the expense of everyone having to attend remedial lessons since they all died.
If you know anything about Evangelion, you know this isn't going to end well.
Cosplay fanservice a-fricken-hoy!
Run for your lives! It's the attack of the killer chibis!
This is your team of crack specialists!? Houston, we have a problem.
Shut up Shinji... I mean... Shut up Yoshii!
Brilliance through stupidity. Will wonders never cease?
I HAVE THE POWER... Glove.
And by God you'd best do the worst you've ever done in your life!
Could have shared some of that confidence with the rest of us, Gendo. I mean, Principal.
As you can see from some of the screenshots, and probably every other blog post about this episode, BakaTest gives a massive salute to Evangelion in this episode. I hope you’ve watched it, or most of these jokes will be lost on you. You’re also going to get hit with several classic Nintendo references. BakaTest should have made this kind of episode all season long. It has a wealth of good parody, the battle system commands the center stage, and the characters are *gasp* useful! While the students lack the individual brightness of the A class members, they can still achieve greatness when they put their minds together. Yoshii most embodies this when his quick, off-the-wall thinking manages to save the day. The principal herself appreciates this quality, and it’s why she depended on them to solve the problem. While this episode was promising, the series only has four episodes remaining and the next episode will likely focus on the love triangle. Oh well, the ESB was nice while it lasted.
Korean figure skater, Kim Yu-Na, won the gold medal and set a world record earlier today. It's not like I really know anything about figure skating, but since she set the world record it's probably safe to assume that she had the best performance ever to take place on the ice. I was watching the competition for most of the day on the TV in my classroom. Since mine was the one of the two television sets that got the game, I had a few other teachers watching the competition with me. It was sort of funny to see 6 men in my classroom watching figure skating while eating the cookies my students baked earlier today.
Anyway, the reason why I think she's possessed is an anime I watched a couple of years ago, Ginban Kaleidoscope. I have absolutely no idea what an ice skater's personal life or training entails, but like a lot of other things I don't know about, I turn to anime for an accurate and totally reasonable explanation. Ginban Kaleidoscope is about a Japanese Olympic ice skater who is haunted for 100 days by the ghost of a Canadian stunt pilot that died during an exhibition. While haunting her, he manages to teach her how to become a better skater and they end up falling in love with each other. I SERIOUSLY COULDN'T EVEN MAKE THAT SHIT UP IF I TRIED. I even managed to find the series online, so here's the part one of the first episode for your entertainment.
For Kim Yu-Na to be as good as she is, she has to be haunted by the ghost of some great historical figure, like FDR or something.
What do you know, just as I think it’s over I have another anime-related dream. For now this is the last one, but who knows how the subconscious works?
So I’m standing there in some kind of nerd hobby store where the most prominent display is a giant banner welcoming fans of Robotech. And there the Robotechfans stood, gathered in the same area, talking about Mospeada or possibly Southern Cross, I don’t remember exactly, and which arc it correlates to.
A nice, roughly middle-aged lady asks if I speak Japanese and I respond in Japanese and we have a good laugh. I look for something to purchase, and I spot some Robotech-themed pens. I don’t know, apparently I really wanted to buy something Robotech-related. But I don’t pick them up quite yet.
I also spot some Nintendo keychains, grabbing a Wario one, and then decide to grab seven Robotech pens, only to realize that if I’m going to the steakhouse(?!) I’d better watch my wallet and not spend so much. I try to pare it down to get a 3 for $5 deal, but then realize I got rid of 1 too many and only have two pens left. But then I remember I have the Wario keychain and it all evens out, because apparently keychains are part of the deal.
The two Robotech pens are very “nice” in two distinctly different ways. One of them features Lisa Hayes and you can hardly tell it’s a Robotech pen. Why, for all we know that could be Misa instead. The other is very clearly a Robotech product, as the character designs look nothing like the show and it’s apparently merchandise for some novel or comic spinoff. It also has some generic tie-in name you’d expect from Robotech, like “Fortress Chronicles” or something equally generic.
I make my purchase, but then for some reason am given a Giratina keychain instead of the Wario one. I ask the clerk if I can exchange it and she says okay, but I have to give the Giratina box back. I think it’s odd, but agree to do this.
Then I realize I was in the store for so long that I cannot make it to the steakhouse. Resigned in defeat, I pass by a new Pokemon movie starring Mewtwo. Actually I’m not sure if it was supposed to be a movie or if I was actually seeing real Pokemon, but the creatures were being sucked into a chamber to fight Mewtwo (though at first I assumed it was Darkrai). The movie is in Japanese. Mewtwo, actually a victim in all of this, flies around and goes to the other side. A Geodude tries to Rock Throw Mewtwo but Mewtwo reflects the rocks back at Geodude and hits two other Pokemon in the process while also saying, “Tsutometa!” In the context of the dream it’s supposed to mean something like, “I see through you,” but in actual Japanese means, “I worked.” The movie is really, really well-animated and a joy to watch. Though I don’t know how it ends because that’s when I wake up.

For the Reverse Thieves’ second Speakeasy Podcast they compared Gurren-Lagann and Shin Mazinger, discussing why the former has a much more universal appeal among current anime fans than the latter. One of the topics that interested me was the false assumption that if a person likes Gurren-Lagann then the next step is Shin Mazinger, or similarly that if a person likes Gundam W that they will like the original Gundam as well. I thought of an analogous situation which I think sums up this problem quite well, and I wanted to have it on-hand and on-blog.
So consider, if you will, the following hypothetical conversation.
“Hey, what’s your favorite cereal?”
“Frosted Flakes!”
“Well if you like Frosted Flakes, I think you’ll enjoy CORN FLAKES! It’s the ORIGIN of Frosted Flakes!”
The person recommending Corn Flakes has his heart in the right place, but doesn’t realize that the reason why the other person likes Frosted Flakes so much might be mainly because of the sugar frosting, i.e. everything that Frosted Flakes have that Corn Flakes do not.
Reducing things down is not the answer for everyone, and just like Frosted Flakes vs Corn Flakes, I think people enjoy the total package of Gurren-Lagann, making it difficult to sell some fans on the idea of Gurren-Lagann stripped down to its bare essentials.
This is the third Ghibli film that I have seen in a cinema. My first two were Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle, two stories that are dark, detailed and emotionally moving. Ponyo may be moving but it’s carefree. Its simplicity is its strength and Ponyo is brilliant and challenging in its own right.
This is the second time I have seen Ponyo but something irked me from the first showing and I’d like to get through my disquiet and what this film must be addressing.
The simple fact is that it’s a story based on the Little Mermaid fairytale. Ponyo is the fish, Sosuke the Prince. I have a lot of problems with stories where girls give themselves wholly over to boys in the name of love – girls should read Undine or watch An Education and realise men are not the answer to anything. My disquiet probably shows my cynical nature.
The film seems to tackle this cynicism – the problems caused by adult cynicism and rationality. Adults raise the most objections and are the obstacles the protagonists must overcome in their childlike and wholly innocent desire to pursue understanding and that which they love.
Ponyo’s father, “an evil wizard” was once human and mentions that people were once able to see magic, presumably reason and technology have blinded us. Now humans have “black empty souls” and dump trash on the sea-floor. The actions of the humans echo other Ghibli films in their treatment of environmental issues and inability to see magic like Catbus passing between the two farmers in Totoro.
Those few humans with the ability to be childlike or see magic – Lisa (Sosuke’s mother), Sosuke’s father and his crew with their superstitions and most of the women in the care-home benefit from magic. They then get to share in the happy ending and can see love in its purest form, uncorrupted by civilisation.
Ponyo and Sosuke are the ones fully ready to accept the magic and they seem to echo Rousseau and his noble savage theory – people are corrupted by progress/society whereas humans in prepolitical society exhibit a natural goodness that resembles an animal – neither good nor bad. It is in Sosuke and Ponyo’s nature to help people whereas adults tend to be driven by fear and anger.
Ponyo
Perhaps I’m reading too much into it. The most important thing about the film is that it is fun.
It is a painterly, leisurely Miyazaki on display and despite the simple story I enjoyed it immensely. The details are beautiful and immersive and there’s a real tactile to the film.
Seeing it for a second time allowed me to see much more – squid sucking up to doorways, birds and other creatures from pre-historic ages, secondary characters and their reactions all adding to the richness of the film. As far as the voice-acting goes, the English dub is good however I prefer the original Japanese.
The film is immensely enjoyable and the sentimentality got me at points. I’m not sure as to whether it was the film or just recognising echoes of my Ghibli experiences as I saw the various non-verbal communication – hair rising with anger, the voluminous tears that gather before pouring down, the goofy unabashed grins and the recognisable character designs. Whatever. This is a great addition to the canon and I recommend you see it leave the adult cynicism at the door.
Arrrgh, it’s hot outside with temperature around 34 degrees celcius. To make things worse, I have to stand by outside the Oral Final Study Examination room from 9 till 4 o’clock. Granted I don’t have to wear suit just like the participants (Man, Swiss German University should think something about this situation. Imagine, they have to wear their suit and try to concentrate answering the question sheet outside the room before they go back in to do a presentation about their answers). Anyway, I’ve made another picture frame Rainmeter skin to add your picture frame skin collection. Enjoy!
Settings: You need to configure inaba_LandscapeFrame.ini before getting the skin to display your pictures.First, change the “ImagePath” variable to the address/ directory which you want the skin to display your picture. Don’t forget to add a backslash (\) at the end of the directory (Example: C:\Pictures\).If you want the application to crawl the subfolders of the current directory, put the “Subfolders” variable value to “1″. Now, to set the length of time on changing between pictures, you need to set “Update” value (in terms of miliseconds).
Note: Installation and usage of this skin can be observed on the Rainmeter section. Happy downloading!
As I mentioned in my bio, I love watching anime. One of my favorites that came out last year was bakemonogatari. Unfortunately I can’t recall how I came across this anime, but it is one of my top five all time favorites. From the characters to the animation design there is nothing I do not like about this anime. The series is 15 episodes long, and for a long while Shaft (creators of the anime) have put the anime on hold with only 13 of the 15 episodes out. Well I was jumping with excitement when on the 12th of February, Shaft announced that episode 14 will be released next week. I can not recommend this anime any more than I have already. Check out the anime, catch up with the series and get ready of episode 14. Wooo! ^o^
P.S. There will be a review/feedback ion the last two episodes and series overall.
Spent some time with my quality time with my brother to recover from the social hangover that is the double whammy of V-Day and LNY Day 1 being on the same day. With my folks were out on a date and my sis out at work, we were both the only 2 slackers at home who woke up at the glorious time of 10 in the morning without the sounds of general housecleaning or the blasted alarm clock. Mine did ring this morning (as I scheduled it to wake up me at 7.45) but it was a beautiful feeling to be able to just turn it off and go back to dreaming. My brother and I ended up walking around IMM and just talking about all things nostalgic – mainly films and cartoons that we remembered as children.
It’s interesting to note that my brother was born nearly a decade after me. He turns 19 this year so obviously he and I remembered different things with only some series overlapping. What I found most interesting was just how far back our interest in animation went back… and just how many of the cartoons whose names that we couldn’t remember were actually asian in origin. We both remembered films like Totoro fondly as we poured over the shelves of the dvd store. I’d state more but we just couldn’t remember the titles. Oddly enough, we could remember the american cartoons for their titles but not the plot. Rare exceptions were series like Pirates of Darkwater and Fox’s Peter Pan – whose plots and animation quality enthralled me as child.
I found myself at a loss when I tried to decide what to buy. Paprika was something I’ve always wanted to watch… and Twilight Samurai and Zaitochi were coveted almost-additions to my collection as far as I could remember. In the end, I bought up three entirely different titles:
Couldn't decide... so bought all 3. =.=
From left to right: Pom Poko, Tales from Earthsea and The Simpsons Movie
Pom Poko
I remembered watching Pom Poko as a child and I loved it. I must have been 10 or so and I probably watched the version that was dubbed in either Malay or Chinese. It was the same situation for Totoro and Dragon Ball Z. I was especially delighted to find out that it was available in these lovely tin covers and with a free coaster that’s too precious to be used. I remembered crying at the end and asking my dad if I could grow up and work for Greenpeace or PETA so that I could help animals (especially the fantastical Tanuki). My dad, wonderful man that he is, just told me to stop crying and said I could grow up being whatever I wanted to be. I was vegetarian for 3 days, enduring the wrath of my mother…. and thus, I credit this film with the one that set me on the inevitable road of being a little more environmentally conscious. Beautifully drawn and poignantly directed, the only thing I’m afraid of when I think of watching this piece of art is how much I’ll cry. Again.
Pom Poko
Tales from Earthsea
Okay, so this one isn’t strictly from my childhood (it was released in 2004) and I read the books at an age where I was too young to internalise the meaning or remember much of it, for that matter. Maybe that’s a sign that I ought to go back to it and actually pay more attention this time round. Spud is a huge fan of the Earthsea series. We watched the Legend of Earthsea, amidst minor prods from him telling me that it was very much different from the books he read. However, I remembered it being very beautifully drawn and the style made me think of Princess Mononoke for some reason. I understood it to be Goro Miyazaki’s first production and while it’s not the book, I don’t really care much because the spirit of the work is wonderfully artistic in its simplicity.
Goro Miyazaki’s Tales from Earthsea
The Simpsons Movie
Me: You know… I don’t know if I really want this. It’s really cheap at $10 but…
Bro: *sings* Spider Pig… Spider Pig… Just think of that scene.
Me: Lol. Yeah.
So The Simpsons isn’t really anime and it’s nowhere as technically artistic as the previous 2 Ghibli purchases I made. But that’s really the charm of The Simpsons – the basic 2-D renditions and the unashamed pop culture references that I grew up with and took to like a duck to water. Watching the Simpsons never required brain power and I never remembered a episode I didn’t like. Every episode cracked me up and the movie, perhaps unfortunately, felt like an extended one hour plus special… Its hard to describe why I love The Simpsons so much in words other than ‘It’s just really funny’. I picked this up for its sheer entertainment value… and just in case, anyone forgot why they love it too, here’s a little reminder that sums up everything we love about the Simpsons:
So that sums up my my animation purchases and the reasons. No one will probably read this but I’ll enjoy remembering the reasons anyway. *curls up and pops in the Pom Poko dvd* ^_^
With this episode Durarara solidifies its place as my favourite series of the season, this was just fun to watch! This weeks narrator is Kyohei Kadota and there were some very interesting revelations.
The episode starts with as flash forward as it did last week, to the Otaku Quartet (I’ll continue to call them this as I can’t remember the other threes names ) chasing down the misfit kidnappers from episode 1 & 2 (the minivan car-chase was a lot of fun) and then backtracks to show how we got to this point.
Kadota reveals that he and the other three are members of the Dollars gang that keep being mentioned – this surprised the hell out of me; have you ever seen four people who look less like gangsters than this Otaku Quartet!? How amusing is it that Masaomi went to them for information on the Dollars last week, only for them to turn out to be members themselves!
Anyway the focus switches to the Idiot Kidnapper Trio who are on the lookout for their next victim at a rundown apartment complex full of illegal immigrants. They decide to avoid nabbing a teenage girl (even if they do fetch a better price) as they don’t want to run into Celty again – instead they target the weirdest middle-aged foreigner I’ve ever seen in an anime! Seriously they find this guy humming along to Nessum Dorma and then he claims to be Japanese before attempting to squeeze through a window!
I had to laugh when the Idiot Trio attempted to drug Kaztano (weird foreigner) and then spilt the chloroform all over the place, drugging the lot of them! Kaztano suggests dumping Mr Pink-hoodie who had most of the stuff spilt on him to clear the air a bit (Pinky also has Kaztano’s mobile phone).
Turns out that Kaztano is a good friend of the Otaku Quartet – long-haired driver guy in particular is distraught to discover he’s been kidnapped and fearing the worse due to the rumours of people disappearing, human experimentation and canabalism that have been rampant in the city. The reason why Driver-guy is so upset? Well it just so happens that Kaztano is a ticket tout who always manages to get Driver-guy a front row ticket to his favourite idols’ shows! A valuable friend indeed.
So the search is on to rescue Kaztano before he’s traded in by the kidnappers – Kadota places a call to Shinra to request Celty’s assistance. I was very amused to see Celty completely gripped by an X-files type show on the TV (complete with X-Files-esq music!) given her excitement about the Slasher possibly being an alien last episode. Unfortunately Celty is on a bit of a wild goose chase as Shinra gave her his shopping list rather than the kidnapper’s registration number!
Meanwhile the Otaku Quartet decide to call Kaztano’s mobile to see if they can possibly come to an arrangement with the kidnappers……only to end up speaking to Izaya who just happened to walk past Pinky while he was passed out in an alley, and answered the phone out of curiousity. Izaya only manages to give Kadota Pinky’s location before he narrowly escapes being flattened by an elephant shaped slide thrown by Shizuo – Izaya makes a hasty exit.
Shortly after the Otaku Quartet arrive on the scene where Pinky is still completely out of it. While Hat-girl and Fox-face want to torture information out of Pinky regarding Kaztano’s whereabouts, Kadota favours just tipping the fella upside down and shaking his mobile phone out of him. They then place a call to another member of the Idiot Trio, Kadota puts on a fake voice (which Gaptooth-idiot actually falls for) and manages to get the location of where the Idiot Trio plans to make the exchange of Kaztano for their fee. The Otaku Quartet feels quite proud of themselves and have a mini celebration where tickertape randomly appears (although think that was the product of Pinky’s drugged brain) before heading for the exchange point (making sure to punch Pinky out again after introducing themselves as Dollars members).
The Otaku Quartet meets the remaining members of the Idiot Trio prepared for a showdown to get Kaztano back – however the appearence of Celty on the scene has the Idiots running for the hills (after freeing Kaztano), leaving Celty a bit confused and wondering if she can go home yet – Celty is adorable.
The Otaku Quartet aren’t content to let the Idiot Kidnappers get away though and the car-chase from the beginning of the episode ensues – the Otaku Quartet (plus Kaztano) seem to be having a lot of fun with this whole chase, it was really amusing to watch.
Kadota manages to capture Gaptooth-idiot when he attempts to scale a fence to escape after they crash their minivan. Kadota turns him over to Hat-girl and Fox-face who seem positively gleeful by the prospect of torturing information about the trade in humans that’s going on in Ikebukuro. Needless to say in the face of their enthusiasm Gaptooth-idiot soon spills everything he knows before they can get started.
Gaptooth-idiot leads them to Yagiri Pharmacy, claiming that they are the organisation that trades live humans for cash. Yagiri Pharmacy is run by Seiji’s older sister, who seems to dote on her brother.
However even more interesting than this is the shot of a head in jar we’re shown – could this be Celty’s head!? How did the Yagiri’s get it and what research are they undertaking with live humans that requires them to fund an underground kidnapping ring? And just what is up with the Scar-girl that Seiji is besotted with? So many questions!
Thoughts: I loved this episode I found it so entertaining and fresh feeling – the Otaku Quartet are really fun characters to watch (I swear I’ll remember their names someday ). There was some brilliant use of music in this episode, particularly of snippets Nessum Dorma. Kaztano was deeply amusing too – he was just so out there, but at the same time completely believable.
The additional information we got on Dollars was interesting too – they’re a widespread organisation whose leadership is completely unknown to the members, and any actions taken are solely up to the descretion of the members. The fact that Dollars members tend to work in small groups and are only connected through a private message board is also interesting – clearly the world of internet messaging is of importance to the world of Durarara, as the frequent clips of messages throughout the series show – are these messages posted between Dollars members?
I’m surprised by just how much information I’ve managed to soak in in only six episodes, the plot-threads are really building up nicely – I’m looking forward to seeing what they get woven into!
Next week it seems that we’re finally getting some background information on Shizuo and Izaya – really looking forward to that as these two are such interesting characters and have a very strong presence in the series.
Finally got to it even though my computer is still dead until tomorrow. Also, got screen caps this time.
So read on for caps if you want to steal them for whatever reason.
At the start we see Shizuku walking towards a crater. The one Yuto created last time with his power stick(ha!). >insert intro< We come back with Shizuku making all kinds of noises rubbing back and forth on Yuto apparently “healing his wounds”. She also states to Himari that it makes her feel good(see above). So they head back to the house and Yuto starts asking Shizuku questions about what she found in the library and she tells him about his power (light ferry) and that it is an imbuement power(imbue means to put power into an object usualy by use of “magic”) and also tells him about Himari; how she is a ayakashi that kills humans or did at least and it could happen again if she continues to fight. This would require Yuto to kill her and I just don’t see that happening..yet. Yuto and Himari talk for awhile after her bath and then walk back to the house where Yuto says that he remembers that she is the girl who kissed him back at the lake to which she says that the first time she appeared to him in human form was when he turned 16(see above). Start Shizuku training..which she says is useless because he just wants this power so that Himari won’t have to fight(see above) and she does’nt like that. So instead of trying to push his powers by putting him in a life-or-death situation she called Lizlett and Rinko to help him gain a “calm mind”. Apparently this means they need to rub all over him in a slightly sexual way(or for Lizlett..just sexual) Himari comes looking for him and sees him with all 3 girls all over him and pretty much makes him miserable by staying in neko-mimi mode for a few days. As Himari and Yuto are walking home after school they stop by a stream and I guess just think for awhile..about each other >insert loving stare< Then Himari notices another person, Kuesu sitting on a lightpost. When Himari attacks she fires back with a magical attack and she announces herself as a member of one of the 12 Demon Slaying families.
Not a bad Episode. A filler episode, but it also progressed the series a bit by adding Kuesu to the harem. It also felt kind of strange, this episode, i don’t know what it was..i guess im just used to straight progression from most series’ ive watched. Oh well, considering “next week” is only 1-2 days away I suppose i should look foward to it and seeing how Kuesu plays out in this harem.(Read the manga if you want to know more about Kuesu-sama)
Well, i should say, i bought new shit and didn’t check the ram type..so its..incapacitated. Which should explain for the lack of Himari-ness.
But in the meantime, i looked up a 2010 Spring preview which you can find here ->> http://akibanana.com/?q=node/1942
im guessing thats the only three for now(or at least I hope it is). Out of those three however, Mayoi Neko Overrun (Stray Cat Overrun) looks the most appealing to me so odds are come april i will blog it.
Playing games until tomorrow..expect review Wednesday and then Friday this week. Maybe a game or 2 thrown in +1-2 Manga’s..need to make it a busy week.

I tend to shy away from anime and manga with shounen-ai elements, mostly because they tend to be ridiculous, rather than a legitimate story about homosexual men. However, on the insistence of my friend, I tried Kyou Kara Maou!, a very shounen-ai anime that, fortunately, is ridiculous not because of the portrayal of homosexuality, but because of the crazy behavior of its characters. A teenage boy named Shibuya Yuuri gets sucked into a portal in a toilet that sends him to an alternate world, where “demons,” or Mazoku (who look extremely similar to humans) live. Turns out that he is destined to become the ruler of the Mazoku kingdom, Shin Makoku, because of something that happened before he was even born. With the help of three Mazoku brothers, Gwendal von Voltaire, Wolfram von Bielefeld, and Conrad Weller, as well as his advisors Günter von Christ and Murata Ken (a friend from back home), his spy Yozak Gurrier, and many others, he learns the customs and rules of this new world, becomes a king, and faces off against many threats to his throne and his people, including Dai Shimaron, Soushu, and the White Crows. All the while, he deals with human-Mazoku antagonism and Wolfram’s insistence, based on a couple of mistakes, that they are betrothed.
So yes, obviously, with Wolfram and Yuuri being betrothed, there are shounen-ai elements in this show. Whoever says it’s yaoi, however, has never actually seen it. However, the issue is handled very well, as Yuuri never actually marries Wolfram, and the love comes entirely from Wolfram’s side, as Yuuri just thinks of him as a close friend. All of the characters are very quirky and lovable, my favorite being Günter, who praises Yuuri incessantly and “loves” him so much that he occasionally gets nosebleeds. And with that, that’s all the shounen-ai in the show. Wolfram and Günter. That’s it. Sure, the other men are all really pretty, but none of them hit on each other or anything. Yozak cross-dresses, but he does it as a spy, and there’s no hint that he’s gay. So really, if you just take it that those two characters are gay, then there’s nothing really wrong here.
The plot is often side-tracked by silly stories and filler. The filler can be fun, but the most intereting developments and the best character stuff normally come in the main plot. The main plot involves Yuuri becoming Maou, staving off enemy nations, and fighting menaces like the Shinou’s nemesis, Soushu, and Ken’s former group, the White Crows. That can get pretty crazy, with some totally shocking plot points (like when Conrad… well, gets his arm cut off). It’s not the most well-thought-out plot, but it’s really fun and can genuinely surprise you. Plus, because the characters are so much fun, you want them all to make it out of things safe, sound, and happy. The animation is absolutely top-notch, and the voice acting is superb, with a star-studded cast including Sakurai Takahiro as Yuuri, Morikawa Toshiyuki as Conrad, Outsuka Akio as Gwendal, Saiga Mitsuki as Wolfram, and my favorite seiyuu, Inoue Kazuhiko, as Günter. If you’re expecting a really deep plot, this isn’t the right story for you. But it’s a great, whimsical tale with fun, wacky characters who you can’t help but love. However, after this and many other anime, I’m rather tired of characters who act almost entirely based on their mother’s wisdom. Just saying. Oh, and FYI, I have no idea why this is translated as God Save Our King. Kyou Kara Maou! means: From This Day, Demon King!, or less literally, From This Day, I Am the Demon King! Stupid translators.
